Aberdeen Solomon David, a New York native and son of immigrants from St. Kitts, was deeply devoted to his family and the labor movement. As a trusted and respected leader in District 1199J, he played a pivotal role in organizing health care workers in New Jersey and establishing key programs like the Training and Development Fund, as well as Pension and Benefit Funds. His vision and leadership laid the foundation for much of 1199J’s continued growth and success.
The Annual Aberdeen Solomon David Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in 1991. In memory of Aberdeen S. David for all the achievements; for all of the ceaseless battles and for the dedication to the labor movement. Aberdeen was an inspiration to us all, but more than that, he was a great teacher. A teacher whose no-nonsense ways of communicating ideas to those of us fortunate enough to have worked with him always helped us to see the issues clearly and to develop effective solutions.

Over the past 34 years, we have awarded over $525,000.00 in scholarships to worthy and motivated children and/or grandchildren of our membership, who have in many instances had to overcome serious obstacles. This scholarship fund also provides a scholarship to a working 1199J member as well as recognizes and honors individuals who have made positive impacts in their professions.
